Groupers, Snappers, Surgeonfish, Eels, Parrotfish, even Giant Napoleon Wrasse park casually in corners, oblivious to all, while armies of wrasse, shrimp and other assorted cleaners pick at debris in their open gills and cavernous mouths.
  • The big attraction in the Maldives are the schools of fish that patrol the reefs in colourful packs: Humpback and Black and White Snappers, Trevally Jacks, Barracuda, Batfish, Unicornfish, Yellowback Fusiliers and Harlequin Sweetlips almost comical in design.
  • The reef's larger inhabitants, including sharks, rays and occasionally even Whale Sharks, are often seen cruising in the blue.
  • Vaavu and Rasdhoo includes spectacular channel-drift dives, wrecks, pinnacles and world famous night dives.  This is a year round itinerary with each of the dive areas offering exciting diving.

Dive Sites Description: * easy ** medium difficult *** challenging

MALE ATOLL

Lankan Beyru (Manta Point) *

The main attraction of the site are the manta rays that arrive at the cleaning station during the southwestern monsoon. The cleaning station itself is a large block of coral covered with anemones and full of fish. Reef sharks, turtles and humphead sharks are also very common.

Rasfari Corner *

It is covered with hard corals and houses a cleaning station during the northeast monsoon. The most common way to dive here is to start at the top of the reef, which is protected from currents and then spend some time with blankets. The wall is covered with hard corals, rich in life and popular for watching turtles.

SOUTH MALE ATOLL

Kandooma Thila ***

Definitely number one in the ranking of the best diving sites in the southern atoll of Malé, offers spectacular conditions to observe gray reef sharks, white tip sharks, eagle rays, great schools of jacks and snappers, both with the incoming current and with the outgoing. The currents can be quite strong, so a negative entry and rapid descent is often required. Reef hooks should be ready to use.

Rasdhoo Atoll Rasdhoo Rasdhoo Madivaru ***

Canall diving between Rasdhoo Island and Madivaru, which offers a spectacular mountain range overlooking the ocean to observe gray reef sharks, white tip sharks, eagle rays and dogtooth tuna. Pelagics are more visible during strong incoming currents, the use of current hooks is recommended. With the incoming current and a little luck, it is possible to find hammerhead sharks. In this case the dive starts in the blue.

NORTH ARI ATOLL

Maaya Thila **

The upstream side is always very active and full of riflemen and snappers. Jacks, white tip sharks, rays and moray eels can be easily observed. Some overhangs around the thila provide shelter for the turtles. With the right current, this is also a good place to see gray reef sharks.

Fish Head **

One of the main attractions of the atoll, essential. Large banks of jacks and riflemen in the current, countless blue striped snappers protecting themselves from the strong currents inside the projections of all the thila. It is also popular to see gray reef sharks, barracuda schools and dogtooth tuna in the blue, as well as turtles and moray eels at the top of the reef.

Bathalaamaagaa Kanthila ***

It offers good conditions for the observation of gray reef sharks, white tip sharks, eagle rays and napoleons, as well as schools of jacks and riflemen. The dive site is active in both ingoing and outgoing currents, but can be more challenging during the outgoing currents of the northeast monsoon. Current hooks are highly recommended.

SOUTH ARI ATOLL

Moofushi Kandu (Manta point) **

Drift diving with the possibility of seeing stingrays hovering over the cleaning station at a depth of about 14 to 25 meters. If manta rays are observed, it is recommended to use current hooks and stay around the cleaning station for longer. White tip reef sharks are common visitors at the deepest part of the cleaning station and blue ray snappers and riflemen are permanent residents.

Kudarah Thila ***

Thila is part of the Marine Protected Area and is considered the most beautiful site on the atoll with exceptional diving conditions. It is also known for its great schools of blue striped and midnight snapper, riflemen and jacks. It is worth having a flashlight to look into small caves where you will often find large hidden groupers.

Kudhimaa Wreck **

A 50-meter-long cargo ship on a sandy bottom about 30 meters deep, right next to a tourist island called Machchafushi. It sank in 1998 and already offers good coral growth and a great variety of species living on it. Nurse sharks, batfish, stone fish, lionfish and moray eels are permanent residents and can be seen around the wreck. There are some entrances that allow penetration into the loading hall as well as the bridge.

Maamigili Beyru (whale shark hunt) *

The best location in the Maldives to find the world's largest fish. You can see whale sharks swimming along the reef all year round. Most boats look for them from the surface. The code of conduct for whale shark encounters should be followed and always explained during the briefing.

VAAVU ATOLL

Miyaru Kandu ***

One of the channel dives you won't want to miss. With a strong input current, the list of possible encounters is impressive. Mainly gray reef sharks, but also white tip sharks, eagle rays, napoleons and tunas are quite common and with visibility reaching: 40 meters during the northeast monsoon, may be the highlight of the trip.

Alimatha House Reef **

Each night offers a great spectacle offered by a great number of sharks, rays and huge jacks. The maximum depth will not exceed 15 meters and most of the time you will be kneeling on a sandy bottom waiting for the sharks to approach.
