DIVING WITH US

Scuba Diving is the reason to be onboard however, and the seas of the Maldives of course have a lot to offer – whether in the dryer season or the monsoon season. And the boat is, naturally, fully equipped to cater for all scuba diving requirements, rental equipment is available.

There is a 60ft/20m diving dhoni used to make the dives, with a speed dinghy as a safety vessel. The boat also has a full first aid kit and fire extinguishers as you would expect.

But, if you don’t fancy diving, why not use one of the jet-skis available!

For Underwater Photographers there are full cleaning and charging facilities onboard. And, should you not have a camera or laptop of your own, worry not, if informed in advance the tour operators can supply this too – complete with 3G coverage to enable you to stay connected where possible.

DIVING IN THE AREA

The Maldives are located in the Indian ocean and stretch 900 Kilometers from north to south. They are made up of 1200 tiny, low lying coral lands surrounded by white sand in 26 Atolls. Although the Maldives has known the world over for the stunning beaches and azure waters, its life beneath the surface of the water is becoming ever more respected by the divers. The Islands are some distance from land, which means there is an abundance marine life. The Maldives islands have some excellent coral reefs and the best diving is found inside and outside the atolls lagoons and in the channels. Night dives are a must as the coral reefs become highly active, with predators on the prowl.

The Maldives Scuba Diving runs all year round, but the recommended monsoons for confirmed liveaboards departures are from November to May. April May and June are the hottest months of the year and due to plankton blooming and manta rays and whale sharks. December to March normally enjoys the best visibility.

There are over 100 dive sites recorded in the Maldives during the last two decades, certain sites became famous, some of the main ones are close to resort islands around Male. Each diving site will create its own story along with the beauty of nature.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • All experience levels. No minimum number of dives required. Familiarity with drift dives recommended
  • There are three distinctly different types of diving: inside the atolls, outside the atolls and inside the channels or passes
  • Inside the channels is where the currents are strongest and you'll find the greatest congregation of fish life.
  • Most intriguing are the cleaning stations, found around every corner and under every ledge. Groupers, Snappers, Surgeonfish, Eels, Parrotfish, even Giant Napoleon Wrasse park casually in corners, oblivious to all, while armies of wrasse, shrimp and other assorted cleaners pick at debris in their open gills and cavernous mouths.
  • The big attraction in the Maldives are the schools of fish that patrol the reefs in colourful packs: Humpback and Black and White Snappers, Trevally Jacks, Barracuda, Batfish, Unicornfish, Yellowback Fusiliers and Harlequin Sweetlips almost comical in design.
  • The reef's larger inhabitants, including sharks, rays and occasionally even Whale Sharks, are often seen cruising in the blue.
  • This is a year round itinerary with each of the dive areas offering exciting diving.

NORTH AND SOUTH ARI

  • Being over 40 kilometres long, Ari is the second largest atoll in the Maldives. Due to the long distances between the best sites, a liveaboard cruise is really the only way to see more than just a few of these excellent sites. The dive sites for big marine life are scattered across the atoll and, with 105 small islands, there are many great spots throughout.

DIVE SITES

  • Bathala area - Maagaaa kan thila, Fish Head
  • Maayafushi - Hafsa thila
  • Fesdu wreck
  • Maalhos - Dhonkalo thila, Maalhos thila
  • Eboodhoo - Thundufushi thila, Dhegaa thila, Panetton
  • Rangali - Manta point
  • Maamigili - Maamigili Beyru, Broken Rock, Dhigurah Arches
  • Khudarah thila, Vilamendhoo thila

NORTH ARI ATOLL

Maaya Thila

  • The upstream side is always very active and full of riflemen and snappers. Jacks, white tip sharks, rays and moray eels can be easily observed. Some overhangs around the thila provide shelter for the turtles. With the right current, this is also a good place to see gray reef sharks.

Fish Head

  • One of the main attractions of the atoll, essential. Large banks of jacks and riflemen in the current, countless blue striped snappers protecting themselves from the strong currents inside the projections of all the thila. It is also popular to see gray reef sharks, barracuda schools and dogtooth tuna in the blue, as well as turtles and moray eels at the top of the reef.

Bathalaamaagaa Kanthila

  • It offers good conditions for the observation of gray reef sharks, white tip sharks, eagle rays and napoleons, as well as schools of jacks and riflemen. The dive site is active in both ingoing and outgoing currents, but can be more challenging during the outgoing currents of the northeast monsoon. Current hooks are highly recommended.

SOUTH ARI ATOLL

Moofushi Kandu (Manta point)

  • Drift diving with the possibility of seeing stingrays hovering over the cleaning station at a depth of about 14 to 25 meters. If manta rays are observed, it is recommended to use current hooks and stay around the cleaning station for longer. White tip reef sharks are common visitors at the deepest part of the cleaning station and blue ray snappers and riflemen are permanent residents.

Kudarah Thila

  • Thila is part of the Marine Protected Area and is considered the most beautiful site on the atoll with exceptional diving conditions. It is also known for its great schools of blue striped and midnight snapper, riflemen and jacks. It is worth having a flashlight to look into small caves where you will often find large hidden groupers.

Kudhimaa Wreck

  • A 50-meter-long cargo ship on a sandy bottom about 30 meters deep, right next to a tourist island called Machchafushi. It sank in 1998 and already offers good coral growth and a great variety of species living on it. Nurse sharks, batfish, stone fish, lionfish and moray eels are permanent residents and can be seen around the wreck. There are some entrances that allow penetration into the loading hall as well as the bridge.

Maamigili Beyru (whale shark hunt)

  • The best location in the Maldives to find the world's largest fish. You can see whale sharks swimming along the reef all year round. Most boats look for them from the surface. The code of conduct for whale shark encounters should be followed and always explained during the briefing.
