THE FEROX

The Ferox is 32 m long vessel, under American management by its owner Captain Anthony Cruzveragara. Ferox was designed with the utmost safety in mind and has proven itself recently in a 7,000 mile trip across the Atlantic. Ferox meets or exceeds SOLAS (Safety of life at sea) requirements of much larger passenger vessels and the guests can be rest assured that the Ferox will transport them safely and comfortably to Malpelo or Gorgona. Malpelo has strong currents and all Divers are equipped with a McMurdo S10 Personal Locator Beacon and will be instructed in their use. For diving boats, the Ferox uses 3 robust fast riding rescue boats (rigid inflatable boats), 2x 60hp engines with a speed of 37-40 knots. The Ferox also has an inflatable life raft that can hold up to 50 people. Located 300 miles off Colombia's Pacific coast Malpelo is a remote destination that requires an extremely seaworthy vessel.

Commissioned in 1991 and fully refitted in 2017, the former Ice Classed Mine Layer has an 11mm armored steel hull, all new machinery and electronics as well as an extensive list of safety equipment including three 6m, self-righting, former Fast Rescue Boats that were operated in the challenging conditions of the North Sea. The owner's goal is simple: He wanted to offer his guests one of the safest dive liveaboards in the world.

OUR CABINS

The Ferox accommodates a maximum of 12 guests in 8 Cabins, the cabins are in 4 different configurations that include a Master Cabin with double beds with private en-suite facilities, large flat screen TV, Single Bed cabins with shared facilities, Single bed with a semi-private bathroom adjacent and shared with one other cabin and twin bed cabins with en-suite facilities. All of the Cabins have very comfortable beds with fine Egyptian linen and hypoallergenic towels. The bathrooms have environmentally friendly toiletries. All the Cabins are designed with your comfort in mind, have an internal telephone and are also well soundproofed. Less noise means a better night's rest. The crew members will make you feel at home on this liveaboard vessel and there is staff available 24 hours each day for your convenience and every need.

FOOD ON BOARD

The menu onboard is varied and plentiful, with a variety of International Feasts and Local Cuisine. If you have any special dietary requirements, please be sure these are noted when completing the GIS. You will be awaken with fresh fruit, hot entrees, cereals and juices. Lunches are buffet-style, featuring hot soups, homemade breads, salads and sandwiches and/or entrees. Dinners are Chef prepared and will normally include salads, vegetables, seafood, beef or chicken with a fresh homemade dessert. Water, tea, coffee, juices, snacks between meals and after dives, soft drinks are included. You may choose to eat and lounge on the large shaded deck or sundeck.

DIVING IN THE AREA

Awe-inspiring and full of wonder, a sanctuary of flora and fauna. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, an oasis of life for native and migratory species. Massive schools of Hammerheads and Silky Sharks are found here along with Galapagos, White Tip, Whale Sharks, Manta and Eagle Rays, free-swimming Moray Eels, as well as the reclusive Small Tooth Sand Tiger. With such an abundance of marine life the island has rightfully earned its place as one of the greatest diving destinations on the planet.

DIVING WITH US

Captain Anthony Cruzvergara has 20 years of experience working worldwide, the last ten working exclusively on Dive Support Vessels. He is one of a very small number of mariners to have completed a circumnavigation of the earth in a single voyage. He is accompanied by Captain Ricky Kelly and fun loving Shirley Restrepo whose experience in business and logistics is a vital part of the operation. Jaime Orlando Lopez is a PADI, NAUI and CMAS Certified Instructor. He has 20 years of experience diving in Malpelo and 30 years in total in the East Pacific (including Cocos, Gorgona and the North Colombian Pacific). The second guide has 15 years of experience in Malpelo, Gorgona and the North Colombian Pacific. • The enormous congregations of silky sharks that often mix with hammerheads to form colossal shark schools and the huge number of cluster and free swimming moray eels are the two most outstanding phenomena in Malpelo.
  • Other common sights are the white-tip shark, Galapagos shark, giant schools of angelfish, Creole fish, jacks, tuna, and occasionally a sailfish, a whale shark and even humpback whales The rare, deep water ragged-tooth shark also can be encountered in the colder depths.

During your cruise

An incredible mix of pelagic marine life including hammerhead sharks (Jan-May), huge concentrations of eagle rays and ‘waves’ of silky sharks (May-Aug) – you may need to pack your woolly socks for these dives!

Other common sights are white tip and Galapagos sharks, giant schools of angel fish, creole fish, jacks, tuna, sailfish, whale sharks (Jun-Sep) and even humpback and blue whales.

Of particular interest to experienced divers is the chance to encounter the extremely rare small sandtoothed sand tiger shark in deep water (Jan-Apr). Currents can be strong, making drift diving the best option on some of the sites.

Occasionally, there can be upwellings full of plankton that bring a lot of fish but at the same time reduce visibility.
