Join us aboard the luxury dive vessel MV Chertan, captained by Rob van der Loos and his experienced, capable crew. A cruise on Chertan offers unlimited diving for the enthusiast as well as an introduction to the local culture.

The MV Chertan was originally built in 1994 and was given a renovation during 2014 ensuring that she is compliant with latest standards. She is 20m in length and 6.2m in beam. Her more modest overall size gives her lucky guests a more intimate and personal voyage. Topside there are other nice touches and facilities.


Being slightly more modest in overall size than some liveaboard safari vessels, the maximum number of guests onboard Chertan is only 10. There are 3 cabin options depending on budget and circumstance. Standard Base Cabin – this is a twin occupancy bunk cabin with air-conditioning, wash basin and toilet. Middle Deluxe Cabin – also a twin occupancy bunk cabin, this cabin is slightly larger than the Standard Base Cabin with the same great facilities. 2 Shared Showers are located on the Main Deck. Double Executive Cabin with en-suite facilities – for couples or Single Occupancy this double bed cabin is a great choice. Situated at the bow of the boat and at approximately double the size of the previous cabin it has a very spacious atmosphere. In addition, it has individual air-conditioning.


In the Dining Area you will be served an amalgam of tasty and plentiful Local and Western Cuisine in a buffet style (look out for Molly's Muffins and Key Lime Pie) there is also a Bar. After the diving is done, relax with a cold beer and chat with your fellow guests. 

Your package includes full board, including water, tea, coffee, snacks between meals and after dives. Soft drinks, local beer & wine, alcohol can be purchased onboard.


The Lounge/Salon area is also a place to relax and check your photos on the TV. The boat also has camera facilities; ample places to charge equipment and camera tables for budding photographers. Chertan has a partially covered Sun-deck where you have to option to lie and tan on surface intervals or, alternatively relax in the shade with a book.

Double Executive Cabin – for couples, this double bed can be for single occupancy cabin is a great choice air-conditioning and en-suite facilities. Situated at the bow of the boat and at approximately double the size of the other cabins it has a very spacious atmosphere.

  • The trip begins in Alotau and ends in Alotau

  • Pickup time at the airport is according to your flights. Give yourself enough time to go through immigration and pickup your bags

  • There is no set departure time, it will depend on the guest arrival

  • Divers should provide all their own personal equipment including BC, Regulator, Mask,
  • Fins, Snorkel, Computer and Gauges. The vessel supplies tanks, weights and weight
  • belts.
  • Diving is at your discretion. Of course controlled by your computer and traveling time.   Some locations where we spend full days, people go in and out at will.

  • There are dive sites like open-ocean pinnacles where the currents may be stronger. Diving the pinnacles can be tricky and appropriate precautions will be made to ensure your safety is top priority.
  • Milne Bay is famous for its visibility (up to +50), large animals and its huge range of species.
  • On the many drop off we encounter large pelagic such as: Hammerhead and Whale sharks as well as Devil and Manta rays at our local cleaning station.
  • For the Macro lovers the reef is carpeted with soft and hard corals like no other, the unusual creatures found on many dive sites made Milne bay famous, hence the numerous visits by National Geographic and Conservation International.
  • The variety of diving Milne Bay area has to offer makes the itinerary special for all levels of diver.
  • Milne Bay is comprised of 7 groups of islands in total from the Samarai group, all the way to the Conflict Islands.
  • The MV Chertan is the only dive operator in this area allowing the guests an intimate diving experience exploring the reefs privately.

  • Safety Briefing, Crew Introduction, Necessary Dive Paperwork, Cabin allocation and ship orientation will take place before departing the Harbour.
  • During the journey to our first dive site for a check dive, please take this opportunity to familiarize yourselves with the vessel and make yourself comfortable.

DAY 2 - 12

  • Explore the best of Milne Bay, deep-water inlet, which has attracted scientists, missionaries, pearl traders, and Japanese and American warships throughout its history, but is now a magnet for divers
  • Healthy reefs, deep walls and coral gardens, diving in Milne Bay is renowned for muck diving
  • Frogfish blend in to the corals, scalloped hammerhead shark, Manta Rays, and sometimes even Whale Sharks and Minke Whales can be seen.

Wahoo Point

  • A small point located on the North side of the mainland with a shelf from 15ft to 50ft in depth and dropping with a sheer wall down to 200
  • This site is frequently visited by Hammerheads, Manta Rays, Whale Sharks, Minki Whales and on special occasions, Orcas.
  • The site also hosts a variety of anenomies, a school of Barracuda and very large Elephant ear sponges. A great place for underwater wide angle photography lovers.

Cobb's Cliff

  • This dive site has a steep drop off on one side down to 150ft+' rising to just 20ft below the surface and dropping back in the centre to a sandy lagoon to 60ft. This dive site is frequently visited by very large pelagics such as : Manta Rays, Hammerhead Sharks & Whale sharks.
  • The reef also hosts a variety of macro subjects such as leaf scorpion fish, Rhinopious, Blue Ribbon Eels, Elegant Fire Gobys, and much more very rare trophies.

Pelagic Point

  • This dive site has relatively strong current and because of this there are large quantities of fish patrolling a steep wall dropping off to 130 feet. Sharks are often sighted on this site.
  • The top of the reef which is approximately 215 feet, has a large number of bommies hosting a magnificent variety of sea life, ie: crabs, rays, rays not to mention all the fish.

Tania's Reef

  • Scuba diving Tania's reef is an easy dive starting with a large coral mount coming from 140 ft to just 8 ft from the surface. When diving this place we are able to dive around the full circumference of the reef with a single tank.
  • The South side of the reef is covered with soft corals of all types. Very large schools of fish feed off this face. The reef also plays host to giant clams and sea turtles.


  • This dive site you could spend a number of dives/days doing, this location actually has two separate dives, straight off the boat, no deeper than 25ft of water you have an incredible collection of cleaning stations, scuba divers are able to get their teeth cleaned if they wish.
  • The site has a variety of octopuses and on occasions, the Mimic has appeared.

Cherie's Reef

  • This is a beautiful drift dive along a slope that's covered with large Gorgonians and littered with large schools of fish. Particular Gorgonians host the infamous Pigmy Sea Horse.

Observation Point

  • A true rubble dive. Sand slopes going down 100' host snake eels, Star Gazers, Pipe fish, Flamboyant cuttlefish, Mimic Octopus, Spanish Dancers, Cuttlefish, Fire urchins with Coleman shrimp and the Bugs Bunny Scorpion fish.

Sponge Heaven

  • A sheer wall starting at 2' below the surface dropping to 200+' Honey combed with small caves.
  • Huge variety of sponges and home to a variety of Nudibranchs, including the large Spanish Dancer. Beautiful night dive.

Jason's Reef

  • A small coral mound located in 150 feet of water. This mound has large schools of Banner fish and Fusiliers as well as many pelagics. Also on this mound is the sought after Rhinopious or Weedy Scorpion fish.

Little China

  • A coral mound coming out of 150 feet of water. Typical of over 30 dive sites in close proximity.
  • Large schools of fish over the front face, soft coral gardens where both macro and wide angle photographers can be more than satisfied.

Michelle’s Reef

  • This wonderful dive site is Located on the North Coast, this is one of the best diving places for both macro and wide angle.
  • A shallow wall dropping off to 25 feet. Beautiful swim-through with gorgonians growing off the wall and sea bed. Able to shoot up into the jungle canopy from 20ft of water.
  • Also ideal for macro photographer lovers, a large variety of nudibranchs, Pegasus fish and on occasions Mimic octopus.

Crinoid City

  • Healthy Coral mound coming up from 120 feet of water. As its name suggests, it plays host to a variety of crinoids.
  • The front slope of this reef is covered with a variety of black coral trees. Off the slope, huge schools of fusiliers, anthias and jacks circle. Excellent for wide angle.

DAY 13

What if I need to cancel my booking?

Your reservation request is obligation free and you can cancel anytime within the first 72 hours. During this time you can easily find matching flights and get answers from our reservations team to any further questions you may have. After you have confirmed and paid for your reservation, the following cancellation policy applies: 

  • 30 % is non-refundable
  • Between 120 days and 90 days before the trip = 70 % is refundable
  • 90 days before the trip = no refund

In case of cancellation the refund will be transferred to your bank account, credit card or paypal account within 10 business days


  • Make sure you meet the country's requirements corresponding to your nationality
  • Make sure your passport is valid at least six months after the date you plan to visit the country
  • Diving insurance is mandatory for divers of all ages on all of our trips: bring your certificate as proof
  • It is strongly recommended to have travel insurance that is appropriate for the type of diving holidays you are going to do
  • Check the electrical standards (such as which plugs are used) in your destination country before travelling and bring the appropriate adaptor if necessary.
  • The itinerary and the number of dives are indicative and are subject to weather conditions and conditions: safety is always first
  • All divers must provide their diving certification card
  • Diving computers are compulsory
  • Local rates, fuel surcharges, distance rates, port fees, etc. may change without notice due to changes in government policy, changes in the price of oil, etc. The changes are beyond our control and the increases must be paid if the boat requests them. We will endeavour to inform you of any changes as soon as possible. A change in these rates does not entitle you to cancel the trip.
